Queensland review of Private Protected Areas: submission guide for landholders
Learn moreWe all know that private conservation is an important pillar in our nation’s effort to protect, conserve and restore our unique and precious nature. All across Australia, landholders are working to create a natural legacy for all of us – including in our most biodiverse state of Queensland.
Queensland’s Private Protected Areas Program enables landholders to voluntarily dedicate land for conservation through tailored agreements, protecting millions of hectares of valuable wildlife habitat while supporting sustainable land use and regional tourism.
There are over 500 private protected areas in Queensland, which contribute to state and federal nature conservation goals. But right now, the program lacks adequate funding to support landholders deliver cost-effective conservation, tackle threats like weeds and ferals, and diversify farm incomes.
The Queensland Government is currently undertaking public consultation on the state’s private protected area strategy, offering landholders the opportunity to contribute and provide expert advice.
We’ve created a submission guide, to help you through the process of having your voice heard through this consultation process.
Landholder voices matter. If you are a landholder with a nature refuge or are considering a nature refuge, you hold a uniquely valuable perspective on the future of Queensland’s private protected area program. Please consider participating in the consultation, which closes 5pm Friday 12th September.
With 1,034 threatened species in Queensland and more than 85% of land privately owned or managed, private protected areas are critical to conserving the state’s natural heritage.
Together, we can increase the amount of land that is voluntarily permanently protected, for the benefit of all Australians.
